Emergency first responders in Yorktown are preparing for any powerful storms that may hit the area in the future.
A specialized team was created in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, called the Yorktown Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT. The team had just 10 members at the time, and were tasked with taking care of the hundreds who took shelter at the Yorktown Community Cultural Center.
Larry Eidelman, a public safety officer, says that while he thought the group was prepared back then, nothing could have prepared them for the havoc Sandy brought.
The team reconvened Saturday to re-familiarize themselves with equipment and practice setting up the community gym as a shelter, should such a storm hit again. They are also making sure there are enough supplies and bedding for possible refugees.
CERT currently has 30 members and is looking to recruit more volunteers.
