375ds agoWestchester's largest city just took its first step to make its biggest update to its park system in decades.
A part of southwest Yonkers that sits right up against the Hudson River is completely industrial now, but it will all become a public park in a few years.
On Wednesday, the city bought almost 3 acres of waterfront property for $13 million in the Ludlow section of Yonkers, with plans to turn it into a new green space, a playground and a boat launch along the Hudson River.
The entire project is expected to cost around $20 million, with the city and county each chipping in half.
The land stretches from just north of the county wastewater treatment facility to the Domino Sugar Factory - and includes the private bus depot in between.
Residents have complained about being left out of other city improvement projects and have dealt with odor issues at the nearby county wastewater facility, but elected officials hope this project begins to change that narrative.
"We want it to be beautiful. We want people to know that it's warming, it's welcoming, and we are going forward with Yonkers," says Tasha Diaz, Yonkers City Council majority leader.
