The Yonkers Board of Education has given the green light to a nearly $2 billion plan to revitalize the city's aging school buildings.

The board unanimously approved the 15-year, $1.7 billion plan that will rehabilitate nearly all of its schools and turn them into state-of-the-art facilities. The plan also calls for the creation of two new schools on the city's west side.

Superintendent Bernard Pierorazio says the approval only begins the process, and that the district will be creating a public-private partnership that would fund most of the plan.
