The city of Yonkers has announced plans to build its first new firehouse in more than 30 years.
The 88-year-old firehouse on School Street was closed down in June due to structural issues that officials deemed were hazardous to both firefighters and the public. The cost of repairs would have started at $10 million, but building a new facility would cost about $10-15 million in total.
Mayor Mike Spano says the new firehouse will be more modern and efficient and contain some historical pieces from the old building.
Officials say they are putting together a committee to work out the logistics of the new firehouse. They say a request for a proposal should be ready by Oct. 1.
