Students at Gorton High School in Yonkers staged a walkout Monday in opposition to an asbestos removal project at the school.

The school district will begin roof repairs after students get out of class Monday. Officials say stones have been falling off and they want to make repairs immediately. There is a small amount of asbestos in glue-like material on the roof, but the district says it is not airborne.

The Yonkers students say they're afraid of breathing in the asbestos and want the district to do the work in the summer. They say if the project had to be done immediately, the students should have been given a week off while the asbestos was removed.

?I can understand their concerns, but they are unfounded,? Facilities Director John Carr says. ?The work we are doing is limited as far as the amount of asbestos is concerned.?

Only some students walked out and it is up to the district as to whether those students will be suspended or reprimanded.
