Yonkers Police Department have confirmed that an altercation that occurred Thursday morning at Gorton High School was a stabbing.
The suspect is a 14-year-old male student who is currently being charged with first-degree attempted assault, second-degree assault, second-degree attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.
Yonkers Public School's Superintendent Anibal Soler, Jr. has condemned the student's actions, saying it was an isolated event that does not reflect the district.
"When these incidents happen in a school, it allows people to form narratives that do not match the quality and experience that occurs in the building," said Superintendent Soler.
Mayor Mike Spano released a statement stating: "I have asked the Superintendent of Schools to work with Yonkers Police and the school administration to review security measures and convene a crisis intervention team for students at the school."
Parents and students say they have been left questioning the school's safety, in particular, its metal detector protocols.
"There's some social, emotional impacts of having scanning happening every single day for every single student and so we do want to give some credence to that...but we also want to ensure that there's a safe space physically, but also an emotional safe space that's occurring in our school building," said Principal Jaime Morales.
He additionally emphasized the abundance of support resources available to students.
The 17-year-old student who was stabbed is expected to return to school once he recovers.
Information has not been released yet on what caused the fight.
