Yonkers police confirmed Friday night that an armed man was taken into custody after leading police on a pursuit that ended with him firing his weapon in Getty Square.
Police say a 24-year-old man refused to stop his vehicle when police tried to pull him over just before 4 p.m. A pursuit followed, lasting two to three minutes. Police say the suspect then got out of his vehicle and tried to run away. Police chased him and attempted to use a Taser on the suspect.
Police say a group of officers was eventually able to tackle the suspect to the ground. Police say that's when he fired five shots from his semi-automatic weapon.
Police were able to restrain the suspect without discharging their weapons.
Police say the incident could have been worse with so many people in Getty Square at that time.
"When I think about the disaster and the tragedy that could've happened if things were just a little different," says Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller. "If the restraint of the officers was different, the positioning of people with baby carriages and the young boy on the bike, how bad this could've went, how fortunate we are that it did not go in a negative way."
According to police, the suspect was arrested in 2016 and 2019 for gun possession. The suspect could now face federal charges.
