The Yonkers Police Department is stepping up its patrols in one city neighborhood after three stabbings occurred this past weekend.

The first two stabbings happened on Saturday - one on Caryl Avenue and the other on Ash Street. Another person was stabbed on Elm Street early Sunday morning.

In response, Mayor Mike Spano and Yonkers police have deployed the Neighborhood Protection Partnership that boosts local patrols.

"What you'll see here is police officers in uniform, police officers that you won't see that are out of uniform - they're detectives and doing surveillance work," Spano says.

Residents say the violence has become a sad reality of living in the area. Kathy Colon says she feels threatened just walking her 7-year-old daughter down Elm Street to school. She says she glad to see such a quick police response, but will not feel entirely safe until she sees results.

Police say that as part of the new initiative, they will be working directly with the Department of Public Works to increase lighting in the area, in addition to surveillance.

No arrests have been made in any of the weekend stabbings.
