Some Yonkers parishioners did not let the recent fire that destroyed their church building from celebrating Christmas Eve Mass on Sunday night.
The congregation of St. George's Greek Orthodox Church gathered at the Greek Orthodox Church of Our Savior in Rye.
The destructive three-alarm fire forced the demolition of the building that was used for storage and as a meeting space for Bible study.
The presence of the Archbishop of the Greek Archdiocese of America added a special meaning to the service. However, there was still a bit of sadness among those who would have loved to worship at their beloved Yonkers church.
As for an expected date for a return to Yonkers, the church's Father Soterios Baroody said the plan for now is for cleanup and repairs to get underway so that the congregants can return.
