Yonkers officials broke ground on renovations at Trevor Park on Tuesday, despite the rain.
It will be the first phase planned for the neighborhood park and will include new basketball and tennis courts, as well as a surface replacement for the playground.
The first phase is scheduled to be finished by early summer.
Mayor Mike Spano noted that generations of families have lived in the area where the park is located.
"They know the park. They love this park. They don't want this park radically changed. They want this park enhanced, so that the kids in the community can use it and enjoy it and very much keep this a part of the Yonkers community," says Spano.
The park is also known for its views of the Hudson River and the Palisades.
