Police say a Yonkers mother and her 20-year-old boyfriend face child abuse charges after leaving her two young sons unattended in the bathtub with the water running Sunday.
According to authorities, 24-year-old Brenda Aviles and her boyfriend, Jose Ortiz, were arrested after Aviles? 7-year-old daughter called 911 Sunday to report her mother and Ortiz had locked themselves in a bedroom and left two boys, ages 2 and 4, alone in the bathtub.
Police say they responded to the call and spoke with Aviles before leaving. They returned to the Riverdale Avenue apartment 15 minutes later to find the 7-year-old girl on an 8-foot ledge asking police to take her to her grandmother?s home. Authorities entered the apartment to find the 2-year-old boy face down in the water of the bathtub.
All three children are now in the custody of their grandmother while Child Protective Services investigates. Authorities say the 7-year-old girl showed signs of being beaten with a belt and the apartment was covered with dog feces. The family?s pit bull was taken to the Yonkers animal shelter.
Aviles and Ortiz were released on bail. Both will return to court later this week.
