Fire departments across the country are reaching out to communities and schools in honor of Fire Prevention Week.
The initiative was established to commemorate the great Chicago fire of 1871 that claimed the lives of more than 250 people.
A safety trailer visited School 22 Thursday on Nepperhan Avenue in Yonkers. It will travel to 12 schools this month, preparing kids for how to face a real fire.
The trailer, which emits fog, teaches children how to escape from a smokey room.
Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief John Flynn says it is critical to teach young people fire safety and awareness and the basics of "Stop, Drop and Roll."
Deputy Chief Flynn also says working smoke detectors save lives, and that people should test them every month.
