A permanent memorial was dedicated Thursday in honor of an old Jewish cemetery buried under a busy Yonkers shopping center.

The Stone Memorial is dedicated to the memory of about 147 Jewish children and 94 Jewish adults that were buried at the site more than a century ago. The graveyard was dismantled to make way for a mega-shopping center. The move was intended to suggest progress in the city of Yonkers, but it was one that proved to be a devastating setback to those who respect sacred ground.

The bodies were reportedly moved to Israel, but in 1989 the decedents? families brought suit against the developer because some of the remains had never been accounted for. Jewish leaders say the memorial is not only about remembering the past, but also righting an injustice.
