A gun-making manufacturer in Yonkers is under fire from its neighbors who say they are worried about both safety and the company?s expansion.
Kimber Manufacturing on Lawton Street makes guns and gun parts for expert target shooters, police and the Israeli military. The company wants the City Council to create a special Empire Zone for it. That would give it tax incentives to expand. People who live near the gun factory are worried that it could be the first step toward taking their homes through eminent domain. City officials say although the company is looking to add 50 employees and gain some tax benefits through the zoning, property would not be seized. However, neighbors say they need reassurances from the company.
Other residents are concerned about their safety. One resident says the company?s use of munitions and involvement in defense contracts could make it a potential terrorist target.
The City Council decided to delay its vote on the expansion Tuesday. Plans are now underway for a public hearing on the issue.
