The Yonkers City Council held a special meeting Thursday night to vote on whether to increase sales tax in the city to solve a school budget crisis.
The district has a $26 million budget gap that it needs to fill. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has promised to provide funding if Yonkers comes up with a permanent solution of its own.
The increase in sales tax could increase the school district's coffers by $14 million.
If the council does pass the sales tax increase, it needs to get to Albany quickly, as the legislative session has technically ended.
News 12 will have the results of the vote Friday morning.
