The city of Yonkers kicked off Jamaican Independence Day celebrations with a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall, hosted by Mayor Mike Spano.
The event took place near the Unity Fountain, where attendees wore yellow, black, and green to show their spirit.
County Legislator Shanae Williams spoke about the significance of the day, highlighting that it's not just a political milestone, but a celebration of Jamaican culture, identity, and enduring spirit. She noted that Jamaica's influence extends far beyond its shores, leaving a mark on music, art, cuisine, and traditions worldwide.
The ceremony included the singing of the Jamaican national anthem and a reception with traditional food for guests to enjoy.
