A Yonkers nonprofit is stepping up to help with relief efforts in Nepal after the country's devastating earthquake.

The Afya Foundation is sending medical supplies to the Himalayan nation. For some of the volunteers who are packaging supplies, it is a true labor of love.

Friends Seminary student Lauren Lord visited Nepal last month on a humanitarian trip. She quickly agreed to help collect and send supplies with Afya, along with her classmate Sophie Moody.

"Just recently seeing all of these places and these people and then hearing about this, I wanted to do anything that I could to help," says Moody, who has also visited Nepal.

The death toll in Nepal is around 5,000 and counting. The United Nations says rescuers are dealing with the seemingly insurmountable task of helping about 8 million people affected by Saturday's magnitude-7.8 earthquake.

Afya founder Danielle Butin says the relief effort will continue for weeks. "The public health crisis in Nepal is indescribable," she says. "Every single item we collect and get in the air is going to make a difference."

The foundation says aspirin is one of the biggest needs in Nepal right now because so many people suffered injuries amid debris. Wheelchairs and other items are also needed.

The Afya Foundation is still in need of supplies to send to Nepal.
