Firefighters rescued a worker who was trapped after a trench collapsed behind a house in Greenburgh Thursday.
Rescue crews rushed to the scene on Ardsley Road around 11:45 a.m. Workers were laying down a sewer pipe when a tree near the trench shifted and caused the collapse. Twenty-seven-year-old plumbing worker Ricardo Gutierrez, of Hastings, was buried up to his neck in the six-foot deep trench as crews tried to dig him out. There was no wooden support in the trench.
Emergency crews were able to dig out Gutierrez after about an hour and a half. He was taken to the hospital by helicopter and appears to have broken bones in his legs. OSHA is investigating the incident.
