A disaster was narrowly averted this morning as firefighters quickly put out a fire at a Yonkers home.
Fire officials say they got a call shortly after 7 a.m. and rushed to a smoky fire on Highland Terrace.
Officials tell News 12 the fire was caused when the ashes from the homeowner's cigar blew into a woodpile that was stacked up against the house. The ashes smoldered overnight and finally broke into a blaze this morning. The fire from the woodpile spread to the house, but crews were able to put it out before there was any significant damage to the home. No one was injured.
Fire officials say that stacking firewood next to your house is a bad idea. "It's important for several reasons. One, there's the fire hazard, keep it away from the house, but also for termites, insects, things like that," says Yonkers Assistant Fire Chief Robert Antulov.
