Police say Deotha McNair, 73, of Walden, was walking along Route 32 near Mill Street in Newburgh at around 7 p.m. when she was struck. She died at the scene.
The driver, 21-year-old Imani Huerta, of Wallkill, was not injured and remained at the scene.
Police say that McNair was with her husband in Ulster County before the crash and told him she was going for a walk.
They say that McNair did not suffer from dementia. However, they are looking into other possible health problems that may have led to her death.
Officials say that portion of Route 32 is considered a dangerous stretch of road with poor lighting, with no shoulder or sidewalk. The say that the driver never saw the victim until it was too late.
