A senior citizen is dead after being hit by a car while walking back from getting her mail in Rockland County Monday.
Family members say Faith Leigh, 83, was killed while trying to cross Route 202 near Mayer Drive in Montebello around 3 p.m. Leigh was struck by a Hyundai sedan that had been traveling westbound. Relatives say Leigh and her husband of more than 60 years had just returned from a luncheon and that she was checking her mailbox.
Leigh suffered multiple fractures and was taken to Westchester Medical Center in critical condition. She later died at the hospital.
Investigators say there are no traffic lights or crosswalks on the section of the road where the crash happened. The Leighs' mailbox, as mandated by the Postal Service, is on the other side of the busy roadway where cars often speed by.
The accident is being examined by the Ramapo Police Accident Investigation Unit.
The driver, a 21-year-old Monroe woman, stayed at the scene. Police say it doesn't appear the crash was caused by drugs, alcohol, texting or phone use.
No charges have been filed yet, and no tickets were issued to the driver.
Leigh raised three children and was active in the Suffern Women's Club.
