Witnesses who saw the fatal wrong-way crash on I-87 early Tuesday say one of the cars made a U-turn right beforehand.
Witnesses say they saw the car driven by off-duty NYPD Officer Richard Christopher make a U-turn on the highway, then stop before driving in the wrong direction before the crash. Other witnesses spotted Christopher's car facing the wrong way on the median near Exit 15.
Shortly before 7 a.m., Christopher collided with an SUV driven by James DeVito, of Airmont. Both men were killed.
Police say Christopher was on his way to work in the Bronx. The New York DMV says he had a clean driving record and no drugs or alcohol were found at the scene or in either car.
Autopsies were completed on both victims Wednesday. Toxicology results will not be back for a few weeks.
