ALERTS: A winter weather advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. Wednesday for the North Shore of Nassau, Suffolk counties. Temperatures can be close to freezing along parts of northern Long Island tonight as rain develops. This can lead to a trace of ice and slippery spots into Wednesday morning. The rest of Long Island is expected to get plain rain.
    WINTRY MIX AND RAIN TONIGHT
A quick round of mostly plain rain will impact Long Island, mostly after 10 p.m. and through around 3 a.m. Wednesday. That said, temperatures, especially along the North Shore, can be close to or slightly below freezing. This means a trace of ice can form quickly and lead to slippery sidewalks, walkways and streets overnight. A few ice pellets also cannot be ruled out. Do not let your guard down if traveling overnight as slippery conditions can be possible from that trace of freezing rain. Even where plain rain occurs, temperatures early Wednesday morning will drop to or below freezing. Icy spots are possible on untreated surfaces anywhere on Long Island Wednesday morning because of this. Use caution!
    COLD WEATHER IMPACTS LINGER
High temperatures will be in the middle 30s to low 40s over most of the next 10 days which is a nice change of pace, but a pattern of daytime snow melt and overnight refreezing will continue with overnight lows most nights around or below freezing. Watch out for icy areas each night and morning. Additional cold weather-related impacts such as problems with pipes freezing in homes and water main break concerns with daily warming and overnight freezing can linger for awhile, even though the worst of the deep freeze is over.
    NEXT 10 DAYS
We actually have a very nice stretch of winter weather from Wednesday through at least Saturday. Wednesday will be a bit windy, but dry with high temperatures around 39 degrees. Wind chills into Thursday morning will be in the teens. A mostly sunny to partly cloudy stretch with highs in the middle to upper 30s will be with us from Thursday through Valentine's Day Saturday.
While there is still the slight chance for a mix or rain Sunday into Monday, the latest trends are for drier weather on Long Island during this time. High temperatures will be in the lower 40s for much of next week with rain showers possible mid to late week.
