Will it be June-like or winter-like this weekend?

A stationary front will be a major weather event Friday night that will determine the fate of temperatures on Saturday and Sunday.

For the first time in 2025, 80 degrees is in reach across the borough. What does it take to reach that mark, and how likely is it at this stage in the forecasting game?

It all depends on a stationary front.

Stationary fronts are most common in the area during the spring months. Like the name implies, they are nearly stationary for a day or longer. They are not strong in terms of heavy rain or snow, but they are significant in terms of temperature. A stationary front is like a tale of two seasons, dividing very cold and very warm air right down the middle.

In just a few miles on either side of a stationary front, temperatures could range 30 degrees or more. That is roughly the range of scenarios for temperatures across the borough on Saturday. In fact, one computer model earlier Tuesday suggested temperatures may not even reach 40 degrees. That scenario was quite unlikely and continues to look less and less likely. On the other extreme scenario, temperatures could reach 80 degrees on the warm side of the front. This is a more-likely scenario if the front moves far enough north.

Even if the extreme warm scenario does not occur, it is more likely that Saturday will be in the 60s or 70s, making it the warmest day of 2025 so far. Warm or not, have the umbrellas handy Friday night as the stationary front develops, as it may drop a shower or two.
