Dr. Farukh Jafri, of White Plains Hospital, spoke to News 12’s Emily Young about how to keep warm in frigid temperatures.
The doctor says limit time outdoors whenever possible.
For those who must go outside, he recommends dressing in several layers of clothing.
He also advises people to warm up their cars in advance when they plan to travel.
“If you're outside for extended periods of time, or really extreme end of that spectrum you can start thinking about Hypothermia,” he said. “You're not able to produce heat faster than you're losing heat, so it can cause symptoms such as weakness, lethargy, fatigue and to the end spectrum confusion and that's very dangerous."
