The City of White Plains announced Thursday it indefinitely closed its Lexington Grove-West Garage after being deemed unsafe.

According to city officials, White Plains conducts yearly engineering assessments of the city- owned garages.

During the Lexington Grove-West inspection, officials say independent engineers noted issues rendering the garage unsafe.

Officials did not specify what the inspection found.

Earlier this month a parking garage partially collapsed at 50 Hale Avenue initially trapping around 15 cars.

Residents told News 12 on Friday that they think it is unacceptable.

"I would probably park on the street rather than park in a parking garage for sure knowing who knows if it'll crash down on you or not," said White Plains resident Emily Stroncone.

"For a garage to collapse like Hale Avenue is a big problem because if people were in there when it collapsed, they would have been dead," said White Plains resident Brian Marrinan.

"I think someone woke up and said, 'Hey...we should investigate...or investigate the garages.' I think it took the collapse for that to happen," said White Plains resident Jane Aoyama.

Officials say the Lexington Grove-East garage has been deemed safe by engineers and remains open.
