Westchester officials and the county's LGBTQ center said Monday they are planning a new housing project that would cater to the LGBTQ+ community.

The county’s Board of Legislators just recently approved a plan to lease the land at Court and Guarropas streets to a developer who plans to build 140 units of senior housing.

"I have seen countless individuals, members of our community, go into senior facilities, supportive living facility or a nursing home, and have to go back in the closet because they didn't necessarily feel safe,” said The LOFT: LGBT Community ervices Center executive director Judy Trolio.

Trolio says the complex is going to include a space for The LOFT that's double the space they currently have on the city's outskirts. It's also going to include medical offices that serve senior members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Funding is still being worked out, and the project has received federal funds. Trolio acknowledged she and the developer are seeking state assistance, and 70 local seniors who are interested in living at the new complex.

"I'd be more at ease with a new place than where I am now,” said White Plains’ Frank Cavalluzzi.

Construction on the project is expected to begin by the end of this year and be fully completed by 2025.
