Westchester Medical Center, as part of a move to bridge a $70 million budget gap, is closing a nursing home at the hospital.
Officials at Westchester Medical say 400 jobs will be cut across the board when the nursing home, Taylor Care Center, is shuttered in April. Taylor's 190 employees will lose their jobs. Buyouts will be offered to other hospital workers as part of the 400-job cutback.
Michael Israel, the president and CEO of the Valhalla hospital, said Monday that the hospital has been profitable recently, but the nursing home has not.
Westchester Medical Center had financial problems for years, losing hundreds of millions of dollars since 2001. Over the past few years, the county invested millions of dollars in the institution to keep it from closing.
