Mail carriers in Westchester and across the country are on high alert following the pipe bomb mailings this week.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer says the county is on heightened alert when it comes to mail deliveries.
Federal authorities are investigating a number of suspicious packages containing suspected pipe bombs. The packages were intercepted before they reached their targets, but they were all addressed to prominent political figures, including liberal billionaire George Soros in Bedford and the Clintons in Chappaqua.
The county has joined with multiple federal agencies in the nationwide probe. The Westchester County police bomb squad was among the first layer of law enforcement there as mail screenings in county facilities are placed under the microscope.
"There's a lot of things people don't see with our presence but it's being done all the time,” says Westchester County Police Commissioner Tom Gleason.
While county authorities say there is no specific threat in Westchester, it's still unclear if any more potentially hazardous packages are out there.
"While it may be targeting certain individuals, it may cross paths with everyday people,” says Latimer.
Authorities are asking residents to be on the lookout for packages containing misspelled words, excessive postage, no return address or if it appears rigid, uneven or has a strange odor. They say to call 911 and leave the item undisturbed.
