Westchester is honoring veterans who have gone above and beyond in serving their country.
A military band and color guard was on hand at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla Thursday for Westchester's first ever Medal of Honor Day.
Local and state leaders were at the event to recognize Medal of Honor recipient Robert O'Malley for going above and beyond the call of duty in Vietnam.
State Sen.Terrence Murphy sponsored legislation to have an official Medal of Honor Day in New York.
"We have roughly 3,500 Medals of Honor recipients in the United States of America. We have roughly over 600 in New York state, and it’s about time they got recognized and have an official day,” he said.
