Over a dozen members of a street gang have been arrested and indicted for their involvement in a violent group assault and robbery that took place in Yonkers, according to authorities.
Yonkers police, the Westchester County forensic lab, the district attorney’s office, and the FBI Safe Streets task force held a news briefing Monday. They say a 33-year-old victim was buying a soda at a bodega when he was assaulted by gang members Latrell Murray, Vance Major, and Perryon McKenny after a gathering at 171 North Broadway around 9 p.m. on June 17. When the victim walked out of the deli, he was struck with a bottle and assaulted as he lay on the ground.
Others joined in on the attack. The victim was assaulted by over a dozen people who kicked and stomped on him until he was unconscious.
The victim was also robbed during the attack. After the assault, the victim was transported to Westchester Medical Center and diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. Police say his injuries were considered life-threatening, but he is now expected to make a recovery.
Police say the gang members in this attack are also involved in 17 assaults, 30 robberies and 10 firearm arrests.
All but four are under the age of 21, and those four have been released on bail, according to officials.
Police say they are facing mandatory minimums due to the extent of their criminal histories.
Authorities say they're sending a strong a message to Yonkers and the county that they are doubling down on efforts to eliminate gang violence, which they say has risen since the start of the pandemic. "We want our community to feel safe and show the residents of our community and county that we are committed — especially gang violence," says Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. “This was a shockingly brutal attack. These charges demonstrate our commitment to aggressively prosecute all violence, including gang violence, and to seek justice for victims of brutal attacks such as this one,” says Westchester DA Mimi Rocah.
