As a heat wave blankets the region, local officials are opening cooling centers and recreational facilities early to help residents beat the heat.
Starting Wednesday, two Westchester County pools will be open from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to provide relief from the scorching temperatures. The Saxon Woods Pool in White Plains and the Sprain Ridge Pool in Yonkers will be open through Friday.
The beaches at Glen Island in New Rochelle and Croton Point Park in Croton will also open early, from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. through Sunday.
"With heat exhaustion and heat stroke, what happens is that the body becomes excessively hot," said Dr. Sherlita Amler, Westchester County Health Commissioner. "If a person has a really high body temperature and they have confusion, this could be a medical emergency."
Amler urged residents to stay hydrated and be aware of their body's response to the heat.
Rockland County has also opened several pools for the season. Residents are encouraged to check with local pools and beaches for specific hours of operation.
