More than a dozen police officers from Westchester County attended a class today to learn how to use Narcan, an antidote aimed at reversing the effects of heroin and other opiates.

Westchester County Police Capt. Christopher Calabrese says the county has responded to overdoses at levels authorities haven't seen before.

In 2013, heroin contributed to 90 deaths in Westchester County.

Health officials say that Narcan, also called naloxone, could slow down those statistics. The nasal mist can jump start the respiratory system following an overdose.

"If the officers don't have the training, don't have the naloxone, often times they are powerless. They literally sit there and watch a person die," says Michael Green, of the state Division of Criminal Justice Services.
