Westchester County is improving roads to help prevent drivers from getting caught in flash flooding.
The county's Public Works and Parks departments are installing new barricades along some of the most flood-prone parts of the Bronx River Parkway.
County officials will soon be able to lower bars to close off parkway entrances when the roadways floods. It will stop drivers who dangerously ignore the signs and cones the county uses -- putting themselves and first responders at risk.
"Their car gets stuck, their car becomes overflooded with the water, which then causes our police and fire to go on there, causing safety concerns as well, so this is going to prevent that,” says Westchester County Legislator James Nolan.
The county will also assess whether the pilot is effective and if they want to invest the money to expand the program to more flood-prone parts of the parkway.
