Snow is steadily falling across New Jersey this morning, gently accumulating on all surfaces due to the extreme cold air. It will continue to pile through the day up to 6-8 inches by noon. An additional 6 inches of snow is expected through the afternoon, especially in northern New Jersey, where it remains as all snow for our northern counties.
There will be an intrusion of sleet that mixes from south to central New Jersey starting after 1 p.m.. This mixing compresses snow totals and can make chunkier snow that is more heavyweight and harder to shovel. The storm's highest impacts wrap up near 9 p.m. with a dry slot of air that pushes away the steady snow. Lighter snow showers return overnight into Monday morning.
Consider shoveling at noon before the changeover and then again near 8 p.m. as the dry slot approaches. Some may need to shovel again into Monday morning as the last of the snow showers leaves a little dusting. The second round of shoveling will be harder than the first due to the heavier-weighted snow.
The highest totals will be at the top of the state, where there could be a snow band developing that unleashes very heavy snow. These snow bands don't appear until they're forming and would be something to watch that can enhance totals.
