A water main break caused major problems early Tuesday morning in Sheepshead Bay, sending water into homes and flooding part of a residential block.

The break happened on Bragg Street, between Emmons Avenue and Shore Parkway, just after 2:20 a.m., according to city officials. Water rushed onto sidewalks and into the garage and basement areas of several homes. An apartment building on the block also had water enter its lobby.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection says the water main break has since been fixed and water service has been restored.

Fire officials say crews first responded to secure the area before turning the scene over to the city’s Department of Environmental Protection. DEP workers were seen going door to door, alerting residents and working to shut off the water.

For some neighbors, the flooding came as a shock.

“I was sleeping and my grandma is in the basement, and my mom woke me up and all of a sudden the whole basement was flooded,” said Amir Aslamov, who lives on the block.

“We thought it was a leak or something but as you can see there’s a leak from the city and the whole house is 20 inches of water down there. I hope they’re gonna fix it.”

At least five homes were affected, along with one apartment building, according to observations at the scene. Cars parked on the street were left sitting in standing water, and with freezing temperatures overnight, ice began forming around tires.
