People in a section of Greenburgh woke up to no water this morning.

Water department officials say they first received reports of a main break around 1:30 a.m.

The break is located near the intersection of Marion Avenue and Meadowview Drive in Hartsdale.

It took some time to find the pipe. Normally a broken water main causes flooding, the road to buckle and a general mess. But Hurricane Ida slammed this area, and Greenburgh DPW crews recently made improvements including shoring up a culvert so the water simply flowed into the drain.

Much of Hartsdale was affected for a time, but Water Department officials were able to do some rerouting to get water flowing to everyone except for one house and a shopping center on Central Avenue.

Some businesses had to close, but Breakthrough FitCO was making do. "We have a slow trickle of water coming in, so we're just going to limit bathroom usage and make the best out of the situation," says Jake Allyn, CEO of Breakthrough FitCO.

Fixing the pipe is another issue. It's a tricky job since the 12-inch main is in the side of a hill. A contractor with special equipment is being brought in. They need to make sure it's done properly so the whole hill doesn't collapse. Officials say the repair could take several days to a week.

Water Department officials say people in the area may notice some discolored water. They say it's safe and that boiling water isn't necessary - just run the tap until the water is clear.
