Water is back on for Yonkers residents following a water main break Thursday.

The main break was caused by a leaking pipe in a privately-owned line that occurred around 6 a.m. near 85 Riverdale Ave.

Riverdale Avenue is closed as officials with the Public Works Department continue to make repairs.

Before officials found the cause of the break -- people living around Riverdale Avenue had to go to neighboring fire hydrants for relief. City crews also brought cases of bottled water and a water tanker to help keep them cool.

"It's very bad because we had no notice of it and it just happened,” said one Yonkers resident. “We just have to do what we can do to survive."

Even though the water came back on last night, a boil water advisory is in place as a precaution for people living in the area.
