An Orange County woman is dead after the car she was riding in hit a tree and burst into flames.
Police say Catilin Feldner, 25, of Warwick, died after a car driven by David Schermerhorn, 24, also of Warwick, hit a tree on Cross Road at around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning. They say the vehicle hit the tree on the passenger side, so Feldner may have been knocked out and pinned in the vehicle. Schermerhorn exited through the driver's side door, but was unable to get Feldner out.
Investigators tell News 12 that Schermerhorn says they were coming home from a Wal-Mart when he fell asleep at the wheel and his car veered off the road.
News 12 is told Schermerhorn was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Preliminary reports do not indicate drugs or alcohol were involved, but toxicology results are pending.
Wake and funeral services for Caitlin Feldner will be held in Warwick next Tuesday and Wednesday.
