A Warwick woman started an online petition to call on lawmakers to remove the outdoor mask mandate for students in school.
Fully vaccinated New Yorkers may not be required to wear masks in most social settings as of May 19, but masks are still required in closed congregate settings like schools.
Warwick resident Francine Deguzman believes forcing children to wear masks outside goes against common sense.
“We are able to be vaccinated. We are in a much better position than we were in last May, and we’re not talking about it,” says Deguzman.
An Orange County Health Department representative tells News 12 there is no local requirement for masks in schools and that the decision falls under the state.
News 12 reached out to the state Health Department for comment but has yet to hear back.
