A federal judge in White Plains ruled Monday the Village of Mamaroneck discriminated against Hispanic day laborers.
The six workers filed suit in April, arguing law enforcement and the village violated their 14th Amendment rights that guarantee due process and equal protection. The plaintiffs abandoned claims of free-speech violations when the judge said they would have to reveal their immigration status. Some of the workers are in the United States illegally, but they say that didn?t give officials the right to close part of Columbus Park where they gathered for work or to ticket contractors who hired them.
The village argued it was only enforcing the law and addressing the public?s concerns. Mayor Philip Trifiletti scheduled a press conference for Wednesday to officially respond to the court's ruling.
