A vigil was held in New Windsor for the 16 fallen service members killed Monday in a crash in Mississippi.
The military plane crash killed 15 marines and a Navy sailor.
Tom and Carol Deacon – whose son is a Navy pilot – were among those attending the vigil at the Rock Tavern Universalist Unitarian Church.
"We know the worry whenever they go anywhere when they're flying," says Carol Deacon.
More than half the deceased marines were based at nearby Stewart Air National Guard Base.
Three of the marines had ties to the area. Staff Sgt. Joshua Snowden was originally from Texas, but was living in Monroe. Mark Hopkins and Owen Lennon are believed to have lived in Montgomery. Lennon was a 2008 graduate of Ramapo High School in Rockland County.
An investigation is ongoing into what brought down the plane.
