Those who served are being remembered across the Hudson Valley as Veterans Day approaches.
In Yonkers, the fifth annual salute to veterans was held Monday at the Coyne Park Senior Center. With more than 82,000 POWs and MIAs still unaccounted for, organizers say the ritual is vital to the community. "Not only for fellow veterans, our brothers and sisters in arms, but also for those families who don't have closure, at least they know we are remembering them," says Sam Riti, from American Legion Post 40.
In Putnam County, a "row of honor" is now up along the shore of Lake Gleneida and Route 52 in Carmel. One-hundred American flags are put up on Memorial Day and Veterans Day to pay tribute to the men and women in the U.S. armed forces.
Meanwhile, a Hudson Valley lawmaker is introducing a resolution to create a veterans "treatment court" in Ossining. County Legislator Catherine Borgia says the goal would direct combat veterans suffering from substance abuse and mental illness, away from jail and into treatment. The Westchester County Board is expected to vote on the treatment court at its next meeting.
