A deputy U.S. marshal who lived in Rockland County has died from a Sept. 11-related illness.
The U.S. Marshal's Service says Zacarias Toro, of Nanuet, died Sunday after a long battle with cancer. He is believed to the first marshal to die from exposure to the toxic fumes at Ground Zero.
Toro was promoted to deputy marshal in 2000 and was stationed in lower Manhattan when the first plane hit on Sept. 11. He was the recipient of the Marshals Service Purple Heart Award.
The 50-year-old is survived by his wife, four children and his mother.
A memorial service will be held at Friday at the Redeeming Love Christian Church in Nanuet.
