Firefighters managed to salvage several baby toys and diapers from a charred West Broadway home Thursday for 4-month-old Arfuenzo.
Arfuenzo, his mother, his aunt and as many as four others live at the multifamily home.
Just one adult resident was inside when the fire started at about 1:30 p.m. on the top floor.
Firefighters are still looking into the cause.
They told News 12 that one resident smelled smoke from downstairs, looked upstairs, saw an inferno and escaped the home.
"In one second, she just saw the fire and she didn't even know what happened," Kevin Martinez said of one of his two cousins who live at the home.
He was in the area when about 50 firefighters from several local departments began swarming the scene.
"I was scared because my cousin has a little baby," he said. "That's why I came. I was working and then I saw the road [closed] over there, and I saw the fire."
Multiple EMS crews arrived on scene, but did not end up transporting any residents because there were no injuries.
The residents were on phone and video calls with relatives figuring out where they would be sleeping Thursday night and in the weeks ahead.
"We feel happy, because no one died, and no one was injured," said Maria Santos, a relative of one of the displaced residents in Spanish. "These things happen, and we give thanks to God."
Officials on scene said the home is not a total loss, but will not be inhabitable for some time.
