Piermont is getting a reputation as a bird watchers paradise as an adult ivory gull was spotted near the Hudson River.
The ivory gull is about the size of a pigeon and usually lives in the arctic, near Greenland and the northernmost parts of Canada. The bird has been spotted in the U.S. once every few years, and almost never as an adult bird. Last month, another arctic bird, a rare snowy owl, was spotted in Piermont. The owl attracted bird watchers who in turn spotted the ivory gull.
The ivory gull's population is in steep decline, prompting bird watchers to drive from hundreds of miles to see the rare bird.
