About 36 Con Edison customers in Mount Vernon were without power this morning due to an underground electrical fire.

A small amount of smoke could be seen coming through the pavement.

The problem was reported a little after 5 a.m. today. Firefighters on the scene tell News 12 the issue is connected to a transformer on Park Avenue. Con Edison reports there were small traces of leaking gas in the area but no evacuations were necessary.

Con Edison crews were able to isolate the problem quickly and restore power to all customers except a church on Park Ave called Church of the Ascension.

Police say Park Avenue between East Sidney and Oakley Avenues may need to be closed during repairs.
