Two popular businesses in the Fleetwood section of Mount Vernon were burglarized early Monday morning.
The front door's window was smashed at Joe's Fleetwood Pizzeria on West Broad Street where burglars got away with $500 in the register, police say.
Neil Ruggiero co-owns the family business of 53 years and said this is the first time they've been burglarized.
"I thought it was a bad dream when I got the call from the cops…it's reality today," he said.
Repairing the smashed door will cost $850.
A block over, another popular Fleetwood eatery was also targeted.
"They come, they break the door and try to steal, they take the register, the money," said Basim Alghin, cashier at Grand Food Market.
Alghin said the front door of Grand Food Market was similarly smashed, the burglars stole the register that had $300 inside.
They also unsuccessfully attempted to steal the ATM.
Police said it's unclear if the two burglaries are related.
