Firefighters faced difficult conditions while battling a house fire during frigid weather that forced several families from their homes.

The fire broke out around 6 p.m. Tuesday at a three-story multi‑family home on Mile Square Road in Yonkers.

Officials say the fire started in a top floor kitchen-area, forcing all three families living in the building to evacuate.

Everyone made it out safely.

Neighbors told News 12 a water pipe burst in the same kitchen the day before, flooding light sockets and causing electrical problems.

Firefighters had to stretch ladders to reach the flames, working through extreme cold that took a toll on both crews and equipment.

Yonkers fire officials say the fire was contained quickly.

“No injuries, we have three units, we had fire on the top floor, it was a good stop by the guys, pretty quickly done,” said Assistant Chief Danny Alicea of the Yonkers Fire Department.

The Red Cross is now assisting two of the three families displaced by the fire.
