A Turn to Tara investigation is raising serious questions about the website Equifax set up to help potential victims after its massive data breach.
Nearly half of all Americans may have had their private information stolen in the massive Equifax data breach. The New York attorney general has launched a formal investigation into the Equifax hack, while directing people to a website to check if their personal information has been compromised.
News 12’s Tara Rosenblum says she was one of the people impacted. Over the past week, she enlisted the help of other News 12 colleagues and asked them to head online to test out the website set up by Equifax.
With the exception of one reporter, everyone got a response that their Social Security numbers, birthdates and credit card numbers were vulnerable to hackers. It also said they should sign up for a product called TrustID to protect themselves. Equifax claims it is free for a year.
When an editor used a fake name, however, the site said that the fictitious person may have also been comprised.
Equifax didn't respond to News 12’s calls for comment, but it did recently remove language from the site that was requiring customers to waive their legal right to a class-action lawsuit in exchange for signing up for the product.
